Parchment Fan

This beautiful parchment fan (made from actual animal parchment) was given to me by one of my students last Christmas. It originates from Indonesia, where artisans from remote villages make this type of artifact for their puppet plays, which are popular with locals and foreigners alike.

If you look closely, you will notice that the perforations are unlike the ones that are created using our normal needle tools. They are much larger and appear to have a clean cut-out appearance instead. I am in the midst of finding out more about the tools and parchment these artisans use.Hopefully, you will hear about my findings in my next update on this page. If anyone has information on this topic, I'd be more than happy to hear from you. In the meantime, happy parching.
