THE 25 MOST POPULAR ENGLISH WORDS
The twenty-five 1-, 2- and 3-letter words immediately below are the most popular
words in the English language and, on the average, one word from this list will be every third word in all written material. The words are listed in the order of their frequency-of-use and in alphabetical order. Note that 15 of these words are 1- or 2-letter words and eight of the ten 3-letter words have 2-letter word beginnings or endings (only "but" and "or" are different in this regard). The 1- and 2-letter words are truly the building blocks of the English language. Students who master these words are well on the way to becoming good readers.

In Frequency-Of-Use order (reading down)

Note that 20% of these words, "ONE", "THE", "ARE", "TO" and "WAS" do
not have regular spelling and can't be sounded-out confidently by beginning
readers: they are "sight words".
