The twenty-five 1-, 2- and 3-letter words immediately below are the most
popular
words in the English language and, on the average, one word from
this list will be every third word in all written material.
The words are listed in the order of their frequency-of-use and in
alphabetical order. Note that 15 of these words are 1- or 2-letter words
and eight of the ten 3-letter words have 2-letter word beginnings or endings
(only "but" and "or" are different in this regard).
The 1- and 2-letter words are truly the building blocks of the English
language. Students who master these words are well on the way to becoming
good readers. |
